What has been . . .

The Full Story

what has been is a short solo emerging from my wider research into attachment, relational psychology and the ways our relationships with ourselves and others shape how we move through the world.

The solo focuses on the experience of slowing down. It asks what happens when we stop trying to move forward and instead allow ourselves to listen — to the body, to memory, to the traces of what has already happened. Rest becomes less a moment of stillness and more a process of returning: to sensation, to rhythm, to something familiar.

The movement language is rooted in floorwork and repetition. Fragments of previously created choreography are brought into this slower environment and re-experienced through rolling, yielding and listening. Rather than reproducing the choreography as it was, the body encounters it again from a different place, allowing something old to become something newly felt.

Sound plays an important role in creating this landscape. Ocean waves sit beneath Such Owls As You by Brambles before the atmosphere shifts into the warmth and nostalgia of I Remember by Molly Drake. The changing soundscape creates a kind of reset — moving from the expansiveness and repetition of the sea into something intimate and remembered.

Within the remembering sea, what has been forms one small part of a larger exploration of the self in relation to the other/s. The wider project moves through different emotional and relational qualities — closeness and distance, attachment and autonomy, longing, listening, rupture, repair, resistance, surrender and the desire to be held or to let go.

Each section considers a different way of being in relationship, allowing the body to become a site where these experiences can be explored rather than simply represented.

what has been sits within this landscape as a moment of pause: a place to slow down, to remember, and to consider whether rest might also be a form of relating.
