Between us and the see

Between Us and the See is a contemporary contact dance film exploring unknown relationality — the space of uncertainty that exists between bodies when we enter into relationship without knowing exactly what the encounter will become.

 

The film is an expanded research emerging from the wider stage project The Remembering Sea. While The Remembering Sea considers the sea as a space of memory, encounter and transformation, Between Us and the See turns its attention towards the relationship between bodies: how we sense one another, how we respond, and how something shared can emerge without being predetermined.

 

Created through contact improvisation, the work places two bodies within a constantly shifting negotiation of weight, touch, momentum, distance and attention. Rather than following a fixed choreography, the dancers work with what is present — responding to one another and to the changing conditions of the environment. The movement becomes a form of conversation in which neither participant can entirely know what comes next.

 

The film is made in a single take, allowing the encounter to unfold in real time and preserving the uncertainty, continuity and vulnerability of the improvisation. There is no separation between beginning, development and conclusion; the work exists as one uninterrupted meeting.

 

Filmed on the coast of Koh Phangan, the landscape becomes more than a backdrop. The sea, horizon, wind, light and changing sky enter the work as active conditions, continually influencing how the dancers perceive and respond to one another.

 

The title Between Us and the See plays with the relationship between sea and see — between the physical body of water surrounding the encounter and the act of seeing, sensing and being seen.

 

At its centre, the film asks:

 

What happens between us when we cannot know each other in past, present or future?

 

What can be communicated through weight before language?
What happens when listening becomes physical?
How do we remain open to another body without trying to predict it?

 

Between Us and the See is an exploration of these questions — not seeking to resolve the unknown, but to remain within it.
