The Remembering Sea
The Full Story
The Remembering Sea is a contemporary dance theatre research and development project exploring humanity, memory, attachment and our longing for connection.
Set within the imagined landscape of a ship adrift upon an ocean of consciousness, the work follows a group of people attempting to remember what it means to be human. As memories surface and dissolve, personal histories, family relationships and fragments of a lost world begin to overlap with the reality of the present.
Drawing inspiration from British and Celtic folklore—including the submerged kingdom of Lyonesse, the otherworldly landscapes of Avalon, and the solitary journey of The Seafarer—the project imagines the ocean as both a physical landscape and a metaphor for collective consciousness: a place where memories, identities and stories are submerged, carried and returned.
Through contemporary dance, contact improvisation, physical theatre, sound, voice and visual storytelling, the research explores how relationships are held within the body. How do we remember through touch? What remains when memory begins to disappear? And what happens to our sense of self when our connection to one another is lost?
At its heart, The Remembering Sea asks a simple question:
In a world that is increasingly disconnected, how might we remember our way back to one another?
The project is currently in an early stage of research and development, with the first R&D planned for 2027.
